Chapter Thirteen

HERE WE were facing the Chicago Wind for the second time in a week. I hoped we’d have the same winning result as a few nights ago. We hadn’t played a game in two days, so everyone was ready and raring to go.

My line was on the ice as the end of the second period drew near, the score tied 1-1. We were doing a great job of keeping the puck in the Wind’s offensive zone right from the face-off. I skated along the right side while Trevor brought the puck toward the net on the left. Instead of taking the shot, Trevor passed it in front of the goal crease and over to me. I tipped it into the net. Much to my surprise and delight, the damn thing went in.

I finally scored! Woo-hoo! I raised my arms in celebration.

“Nice pass!” I yelled to Trevor, who was skating over to me.

The grin on his face was blinding as he threw his arms around me. I was happy that he’d assisted on my first goal as a Detroit Wheel. The celebration was almost better than scoring. Having Trevor’s arms wrapped tightly around me, even in front of a crowded arena, was heaven. I needed to score a goal every night to get hugs like this.

“I told you I’d set you up,” he reminded me as our teammates joined the celebration. “Remember, I get to take your car out for a spin.”

“Yeah, yeah,” I said with a huge grin on my face. Thank God I was no longer snakebitten. I’d almost forgotten how awesome it felt to score a goal.

I skated toward center ice for the face-off, expecting Trevor to be getting ready for the puck to drop, but he was over at the bench chatting with our equipment manager. I couldn’t quite make out what Trevor was saying to him. He had a sly look on his face when he lined up at center ice for the face-off.

What the fuck was that all about?

We started the third period with a 2-1 lead. About five minutes in, I took a drop pass from Tally and skated the puck into the Wind’s offensive zone. Once I was safely across the blue line, Trevor skated in ahead of me. I passed him the puck, which he one-timed into the net. Top shelf, right over the goalie’s shoulder.

Trevor and I raised our sticks in the air. I skated over to Trevor and knocked fists with him for good measure, emphasizing the whole Wonder Twins thing. The crowd seemed to eat it up. I glanced up at the scoreboard and noticed that they showed video of me and Trevor fist-bumping, with a graphic that read “Wonder Twin Powers Activate!” It was pretty cool, even if it was kind of cheesy.

Unfortunately we allowed the game to get tied, but Chicago took a bad penalty in the last minute of regulation. The game couldn’t end in a tie so would be playing a five-minute overtime, unless someone scored, then the game would be over.
